Public Engagement with Schools

An important part of the BREATH Public Engagement mission is outreach to schools within the Partner regions.  This involves explaining lung health and disease in the context of biomedical science, and increasing awareness of COPD – including presentations on smoking as a (preventable) major risk factor.

School outreach extends across all three partners.  Below is an example of the ongoing BREATH drive in Dumfries & Galloway:

BREATH team present COPD programme at Eastwood High School

BREATH team presented the COPD/lung health programme to senior pupils at Eastwood High; PhD student Kimberly Black talked about her route from school to a PhD presenting at international conference.

Actively engaging in the BREATH campaign, senior biology pupils at Eastwood High identify a lung disease prevalent in Scotland (including South and West):

BREATH present at Stranraer Campus, D&G College

BREATH team from UWS presented the COPD programme to students and staff at Stranraer Campus, Dumfries & Galloway College. Good questions, and lively discussion on e-cigarettes / vaping. Great to be welcomed in on the Main College Poster board (albeit affiliation should read UWS …)

Respiratory Nursing Students Identify Lung Disease Prevalent in Ayrshire

As part of respiratory physiology lectures on the ‘Responding to Ill Health’ module, enthusiastic second year nursing students at UWS-Ayr campus collectively identify COPD as the 3rd top fatal disease globally, prevalent in Ayrshire.

BREATH antismoking schools campaign

As part of World COPD Day, the UWS BREATH team of staff nad PhD students present on the link between smoking and COPD to the enthusiastic pupils of Penninghame and St Ninian’s Primaries, Newton Stewart.

UWS students increase Public Awareness of COPD

In response to the GOLD Board of Directors challenge to increase public awarness, BREATH engages with UWS Nursing students at Ayr campus, and Science students at Paisley campus, to identify the lung disease which is not only the third top killer disease globally, but is also prevalent in Southwest Scotland – including Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway.

BREATH Egagement at Secondary Schools in Dumfries & Galloway

UWS BREATH team present at the St Joseph’s College STEM event – part of the concerted BREATH schools engagement drive in both Dumfries & Galloway, and Ayrshire:

Student Engagement: Research-informed Teaching

BREATH engagement includes raising awareness with our undergraduate students (research-informed teaching) – Which lung disease is particularly prevalent in South West Scotland? Let’s ask year 2 science students at the UWS: bet they now know!
